Silicone Sealant: application of the composition in the home

When carrying out construction and repair work regularly there is a need to seal the seams, gluing various surfaces. Two decades ago, mastics, adhesives, and putties were used for this. They were distinguished by a low quality of performance of the tasks set and a short service life. Today, a wide range of silicone sealants is used for this.

The technical characteristics of these compounds allow working with a wide variety of surfaces, reliably sealing seams and gluing surfaces. Used silicone sealant for bath, roof repair, production of the aquarium, for exterior and interior works. This is one of the most versatile materials, characterized by efficiency and reasonable price.

What is silicone sealant?

Silicone sealant was developed and launched into mass production almost 60 years ago. It is based on silicone rubbers that can be cured in air at room temperature. These are white or transparent formulations that are not difficult to apply. They are packaged in special plastic tubes with extruded pistons, sometimes in film tubes.

The chemical properties of a silicone sealant are such that they require water contained in the air to cure. In order for a viscous liquid composition to gain the necessary strength, it is necessary to apply a layer no thicker than 10-12 mm.

Silicone-based universal sealants offer excellent adhesion to a wide variety of substrates. It is used for glass, for metal, for wood and concrete, stone and plastic. Excellent waterproof performance makes silicones one of the best sealants. Manufacturers produce heat-resistant silicone sealant that can maintain its technical characteristics at a temperature of 300ºС. All this makes the compositions in demand during the various works.

Produce one-component and two-component sealants, different in purpose. According to their composition, they are divided into acidic and neutral, differing in the method of application. Acidic acids are not recommended for work on metals, as they can provoke corrosion. Neutrals have a higher cost, are distinguished by the absence of a characteristic acetic odor.

Advantages of silicone sealants

Universal silicone sealant has the following advantages:

  • excellent elasticity;
  • high strength characteristics;
  • wide temperature operating range;
  • perfectly resists ultraviolet and moisture;
  • resistance to aggressive chemicals;
  • long service life.

Oil-resistant and cold-resistant sealant is used for exterior work, they are filled with seams, joining pipes, repairing professional flooring. The compositions have antifungal properties, they are used in bathrooms and toilets.

The purpose of these compounds can be different, for outdoor work using a frost-resistant sealant. Water resistance allows the use of silicones during roofing. Both colorless and colored compositions are used - manufacturers produce a wide range of products, which allows you to choose a sealant to match the color of metal tiles or shingles. Silicone sealant is used for the roof when carrying out various works, mainly for arranging complex assemblies that require additional sealing. Used sealant for pipes and gutters of the spillway system, ensuring the fixation of its elements. It seals up joints formed during installation of the wall profile. It takes into account that it is silicone-based compounds that have excellent adhesion not only to metal, but also to brick and concrete.

Sealant for roofing made of corrugated board is characterized by high elasticity, has excellent sealing properties. It is selected when laying dend, installation of ventilating pipes, aprons of oven chimneys. In the latter case, you can use a special high-temperature sealant for the furnaces. It is able to withstand sharp fluctuations in temperature and heat of several hundred degrees.

Transparent silicone sealant for windows, used when installing winter gardens, greenhouses and working with glass, is very popular with builders. It allows you to provide a high level of sealing frames and joints between plastic elements. The composition can be used for internal work for gluing mirrors. In everyday life, silicone sealant for the bathroom is the most popular, mostly white or transparent compounds used to seal the joints between the bathroom and the wall, shower and wall. They have excellent water resistance, antifungal properties. Apply this silicone sealant to connect sewer pipes, sealing the seams of tile, adjoining sanitary equipment.

Silicone high-temperature sealant is used for lining ceramic tiles and decorative elements of fireplaces and stoves. Frost-resistant compounds are used in the installation of clinker and tile when conducting outdoor work. With their help, you can finish the ceramics surface of wood, stone.

Application and removal of silicone sealant

Frost-resistant and water-resistant colorless or white sealant for exterior applications is used to apply on wood, metal, stone, concrete bases. The only weak link is plastic, a specialized primer contributes to high-quality application when working with it. How to apply silicone sealant on various bases? Regardless of whether a black or colorless composition is used, the seams are sealed or the surfaces are glued together, it is imperative that you prepare. Old silicone is removed, the surface is cleaned and degreased, it is well dried. On a wet base, you can only apply a special sealant, the technical properties of which allow it to be used in a wet environment.

Working with wood or concrete sealant is quite simple, thanks to the special shape of the packaging. Manufacturers supply colorless, black and white universal compounds in special tubes. For work use a special gun, which is a frame and a piston with a spring handle. Thanks to him, even a child can cope with the application. How to apply silicone sealant with a gun? With a colorless or black neutral or universal sealant there is always a dispenser. The tube is inserted into the gun, the tip is cut off and the dispenser is screwed on. Depending on the thickness of the seams, the dispenser can be cut off strongly or only from the edge. By squeezing the pistol grip, the piston can be set in motion, which squeezes out the right amount of colorless or black sealant from the tube.

When applied to the seam between wood or ceramic tiles, you must not forget that the main property of sealant for stone or wood is elasticity. During operation, only the contact of the compound with two surfaces can ensure it. There is no need to seal the sealant strongly, otherwise its elasticity will be lost. During operation, it is required to hold the dispenser at an angle of 45 degrees to the seam, then the sealant will grasp with only two parallel seam walls.

How and what to remove silicone sealant, because an excess of even a transparent composition can have a negative impact on the exterior, not to mention the use of black sealant. After applying a large amount of liquid sealant on a concrete or wooden base, it is removed with a rubber spatula. A small amount immediately after the application of a neutral or heat-resistant composition can be removed with a wet cloth. From the hands of black high-temperature sealant is washed off with soapy water.
